Your deductible is the part of the claim that will not be covered by your insurance. For example: if you have $10,000 worth of roof damage and a $1000 deductible, the insurance company will pay you or your contractor $9000. The remainder is your responsibility. If your damage does not exceed your deductible then the insurance will not pay any part of the claims. For example if you have $900 worth of roof damage and you have a $1000 deductible the insurance company will issue a payment for your damage because it has not reach the deductible threshold.

The best way to file a claim is to contact your insurance company directly. Most carrier sites have a claims link with instructions. Some have the ability to file with a claim form online but we always recommend making a phone call so you can get a claim # assigned and provided to you right then. Have your policy number handy. If you are unsure who your carrier is or your policy number give us a call and we can forward you to the right place.

If you a home insurance claim and you have a mortgage the claims check will include the name of your mortgage company on it. Its a good idea if you have a claim to call your lender and let them know, they will give you instructions up front on how to handle the claims check. You may be able to take the check to a branch location OR you can just mail it in and wait for a check to be sent back or a direct check issued to your contractor.

The most important thing is to get your vehicle cleared of traffic and all the occupants safe and off the road. Don't worry about disrupting the scene of the accident or leaving it until a cop shows up, your safety is more important. Then make sure you exchange information with the other driver get their name, phone number, and take a quick pic of their insurance ID card. Then take pictures...take as many as you can to show the damage to your vehicle, their vehicle, and property around you that is damage AND the place you had the accident. For example, if you are at an intersection with a stop sign walk a few paces down the street and take a picture showing the entire intersection. This really helps the insurance adjuster understand what happened and where.
